Restore C19: Outcomes for women denied immediate breast reconstruction during the COVID-19 pandemic

Introduction: As part of the emergency response to COVID-19 pandemic, immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) following mastectomy was temporarily withdrawn allow re-prioritisation resources. The B-MaP-C study identified women treated during 'Alert' phase who would normally have been offered IBR. RESTORE C19 aimed explore ongoing management this group. Methods: Women not IBR initial pandemic were from REDCap database. Collaborating units contacted and data submitted between December 2021 July 2022 regarding receipt or other surgery. Simple statistics used summarise results. (Existing B-Map-C local audit approvals applied) Results: Of 374 due COVID-19, follow up available for 302 (81%). Less than half these had seen discuss DBR (n=142, 47%). At 28 months post mastectomy, only 22 (8%) undergone DBR: Most reconstructions (n=16, 73%) abdominal free flaps with smaller numbers having expander/implants (23%) pedicled (4%). 150 detailed as planning DBR, just over (n=77, 51%) remained undecided about their reconstructive options. Conclusions: Hundreds are yet receive even surgery almost three years after mastectomies. Qualitative work is experiences group, but a recovery plan urgently needed support move on lives.
